Why I Created The Outtake
No Medium publication is devoted exclusively to film and TV. Until now.
Medium features several “publications.” At present, some of the most popular are
- Matter (a hodgepodge of stuff)
- The Synapse (education)
- Culture Club (race, class, and culture)
- Backchannel and The Message (technology)
- Human Parts and The Archipelago (stories about being human)
- Cuepoint (music).
But none of these publications is devoted exclusively to film and television. This is where THE OUTTAKE comes in.

So many of the people with whom I interact daily — academics, cinephiles, hardcore film and TV fans, and all-around great storytellers — have brilliant, funny, and personal things to say about film and television.
But because of sucky writing platforms (I’m looking at you, WordPress and Tumblr), unfamiliarity with how SEO works, and a disinterest in self-hosting or self-promotion, their writing doesn’t always find the audience it should. Also, let’s face it, traditional blogging is dead.
So starting April 1, on THE OUTTAKE, I’d like to circulate smart, informed, accessible writing on all aspects of film and television, classical and contemporary. One new story, every weekday.
If you’d like to contribute (and why wouldn’t you?!), please see the submission guidelines or this short guide.
